Inflammatory Orbital Diseases

1. Orbital Infections

There are bone cavities that are filled with air inside the lower, inner and upper sides of the orbit called sinus. Infections related to the airol spaces like sinusitis can be spread to the orbit. And sometimes infections can reach the orbit and affect it following a trauma, either directly or with blood-borne. Orbital apse, subperiosteal apse, orbital cellulite are all important orbital infections that are hard to treat and that can cause serious issues.

What are the symptoms?

  • Pain
  • Swelling and reddening on the eyelids
  • Motion limit on the eye
  • Eye growing towards the front (exophthalmos)
  • Swelling and reddening on the eye
  • Blurry vision and occasionally visual impairment are some of the symptoms.

How is it diagnosed?

In a situation like this, firstly one should immediately go to the hospital. After the examination, a diagnosis is made with the help of tests like blood analysis, cat scan and MR.

Treatment

Hospitalization as soon as the diagnosis is made is appropriate. Heavy antibiotics are prescribed. If an infection related to fungus is suspected, antifungal medicine would also be needed.

Is surgery needed?

Surgery is needed in some localized infections like subperiosteal apse. However, before the surgery an otorhinolaryngologist should also be consulted and if there is a sinusitis infection, these should be operated on in the same session.

2. Non-infectious Inflammations of The Orbit

Some immune system diseases like orbit disease related to thyroid, pseudotumor orbit, sarcoidosis can affect the orbit. Especially orbitopathies diseases related to thyroid is quite common and can cause serious problems.
