Entropion is the inward turning of the eyelid. When the eyelid turns inward, the eyelashes located along the free edge of the eyelid can point towards the eye, causing damage to the transparent and sensitive tissues of the eye.
What causes Entropion?
The most common type of entropion is senile entropion, which occurs due to aging. With senile entropion, certain tissues that make up the eyelid weaken and become lax as a result of the aging process. The imbalance in the tissues contributing to eyelid anatomy leads to the eyelid turning inward. Additionally, entropion can occur in cases of trauma, certain inflammatory conditions of the eyelid, and certain eyelid surgeries.
How can I tell if I have Entropion?
The constant contact of eyelashes turning inward and touching the transparent layer of the eye causes extreme discomfort for patients. Therefore, these patients often need to seek medical attention much earlier.
What type of complaints occur in Entropion?
Complaints in entropion include:
- Eye pain
- Burning sensation
- Redness
- Excessive tearing
- Formation of crusts
- These complaints are not temporary.
Is Entropion a dangerous disease?
In a single word answer, yes. We have a transparent and glass-like tissue called the cornea in the front of our eyes that allows us to see. In patients with entropion, the eyelashes are in constant contact with the cornea. In the initial stages, there is sensitivity and pain in the cornea, but over time and with continued contact, the cornea develops wounds and infections. As the contact persists, these wounds deepen. Even if entropion is corrected with surgery at this stage, the existing wounds heal with scars. Unfortunately, these scars on the cornea become permanent and lead to visual impairment.
What is the treatment for Entropion?
The only permanent treatment for entropion is surgery. However, some medical treatments are recommended while waiting for the surgery.
Medical treatments:
- Artificial tears and gels for corneal dryness.
- Antibiotic ointments.
- We recommend some eyelid-flipping exercises.
Surgical treatments:
There are various surgical techniques available, and the choice of technique depends on the patient’s age, the cause of the disease, and the severity of the condition. However, the primary goal is to return the eyelid to its former and healthy position.
Is the surgery performed under local or general anesthesia?
Most often, we prefer local anesthesia. However, depending on factors such as the patient’s age, stress level, and the chosen surgical technique, we may occasionally opt for general anesthesia.
Can i just pull out my eyelashes without surgery?
Some patients pluck their eyelashes due to ingrown lashes. This is a natural defense mechanism and not incorrect. However, unfortunately, this is not a solution. The solution is, of course, to return the eyelid to its previous position.
